This is one of my favorite paintings to make because of the scale and huge amount of personal artifacts I got to bring to life-The pillow cases, and socks from my Rainy, and the giant Gumby-this piece is all around fun. One of the most important artifacts in this painting is the poster in the back which was from a SF Midnight for Maniacs screening of Terry Gilliam’s “Brazil” at the Roxy Theater that my best friend took me to. You can’t see it in the painting but the poster says the main phrase of the movie: It’s only a state of mind.” I was instantly inspired by this long, intense, and bizarre movie. I loved how there are parts that are so distinctly dreams and others that seem so real but in the end only you get to decide what is fact and fiction. This combining of reality and fantasy has been a huge part of my life and art and I wanted to make something that manifested this idea of reality being what you dream it to be. “Turn off the Lights” illustrates a casual and romantic night of the Piñata person and I enjoying a movie together but it is up to the viewer to decide if this creature and moment is real or pure imagination.
